This article is from June this year in the Jewish Daily Forward. Some people attribute Jewish activism in favour of immigration to the wish to protect their fellow Jews from persecution in previous decades by offering them an escape route into America or the countries where they happened to be resident. But as this article makes clear, the pro-immigration activism continues into the present day, and is a virtually unanimous effort among leading Jewish organisations. Similarly, in the Counterjihad movement, we see a consistent strain of activism denying or minimising the connection between immigration and islamisation.
Jews Unite Behind Push for Immigration Reform
Ethics and Self-Interest Drive Unusual Nationwide Effort

Rabbi Mark Diamond stood on the border with Mexico on a brisk February day, alongside the Rev. Alexei Smith of the Catholic Archdiocese, the Rev. Mary Glasspool of the Episcopal Diocese and a host of clergy from Presbyterian, Methodist and United Church of Christ ministries.

All of them peered through the corrugated steel wall at the rough miles between countries. The scene evoked thoughts of the old adage Mexicans invoke about their country: “So far from God, so close to the United States!”

Diamond, the American Jewish Committee’s Los Angeles director, who arranged the clerics’ 25-member fact-finding mission, is hoping to bridge a comparable distance — between a life of promise and a life of uncertainty — for millions of noncitizens in the United States.

Diamond’s key role in organizing this gathering was no isolated communal act. After months of delay, the U.S. Senate is set to vote on the most comprehensive immigration reform legislation in 27 years. And Jewish groups across the country are acting together in a way characteristic of the community on few issues besides Israel.

“It’s about the right thing to do,” said Robert Gittelson, co-founder of Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and a Republican. In op-ed pieces and interviews, Gittelson, a retired Jewish businessman from California’s San Fernando Valley, has called certain GOP strategies on immigration reform “un-biblical” and “cruel.”

Those leading an active push for the bill, which will offer a path to citizenship for some of the nation’s 11 million undocumented aliens, include the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, Bend the Arc and the National Council of Jewish Women.

The Senate vote — and the even harder struggle that will follow in the Republican-controlled House — represents the fulfillment of a sustained campaign by the Jewish community for immigration reform, which has built momentum over the past decade.

Whether or not the necessary votes are mustered from both houses to land a historic immigration law reform bill on President Obama’s desk, Jewish outreach, particularly in the Southwest — home to the largest share of America’s emerging and increasingly powerful ethnic and interfaith populations — promises to be politically and socially influential beyond the issue it addresses.

California, with 2.6 million undocumented residents, is a front line in the battle for this reform. And a Jewish establishment ever mindful of its need to operate through alliances and coalitions to advance its own interests is not blind to the implications of the issue in a country whose demography is shifting rapidly. In addition to working with Latino groups, the ADL’s Southwest regional office has forged alliances with Asian groups representing undocumented Koreans, Chinese, Filipino and other Asian Pacific immigrants in the Southland.

“It’s the ethical thing to do,” said HIAS president and CEO Mark Hetfield, of the community’s immigration reform activism. But he quickly added, “It’s in our strategic interest.”

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, reflects the deepening relationship that Jewish groups are developing through their visibility on the immigration issue.

“I really admire the way that the Jewish community has gone deep in support of immigration reform,” Salas told the Forward. A 15-year veteran of immigration rights activism, Salas fondly recalled a 2006 mass mobilization, when a procession through L.A. streets began with a cantor blowing a shofar and singing “Let my people stay!”

Salas counted efforts by Jewish organizations as second only to Catholic groups in their impact. A key factor, she said, is that HIAS and the AJC, founded at the height of Jewish immigration more than a century ago, have a built-up institutional expertise at integrating new arrivals into American society, with programs, legal resources and family services already in place — but now serving Spanish speakers instead of Yiddish.

The Ford Foundation recently awarded a two-year $1 million grant to the AJC’s Bridging America Project, which is planning “joint advocacy workshops in Dallas, New York and Washington, D.C.; a ‘national conversation’ among Latino and Jewish leaders about issues of mutual concern, and conferences in Houston, Miami and New Jersey on the economic benefits of immigration, among other activities.

Salas has also worked closely with the ADL, which keeps a keen eye on extremist groups that have set up vigilante patrols on the border between the United States and Mexico. An ADL study reported that “violent incidents against illegal immigrants have been brutal and are occurring with greater regularity, further intensifying the atmosphere of fear and suspicion on both sides of the border.” The ADL has also tracked a rise in hate crimes, discrimination cases and bigotry against Latinos.

In L.A. — a city where Latinos are nearly half the population and whose new mayor, Eric Garcetti, boasts both Jewish and Mexican heritage — Salas’s group also works with the Progressive Jewish Alliance, the Jewish Labor Committee and Bend the Arc, a progressive national Jewish group, in pushing for immigrant labor protections.

“It’s not a one-way street,” Salas said. When it comes to Israel, the Latina activist suggested, the two groups’ relationship may help to modify anti-Israel viewpoints and foster dialogue rather than demonization. “It comes up,” Salas said, referring to the Middle East issue, “and there’s a perspective: ‘Isn’t this [U.S. treatment of Latinos] the same as in Israel with the Palestinians?’ It’s an opportunity to talk that through, to talk in the context of global immigrant policy, where people can be critical, but in good faith.”

Newly arrived Latinos tend to show higher rates of anti-Semitism, said Amanda Susskind, the ADL’s Pacific Southwest regional director. She attributed the phenomenon, which shows up in surveys, to “exposure to some religious teachings.” But the next generation, she said, is no different in its relationship with Jews than the rest of Americans.

Asians are also active in coalitions with Jewish groups addressing immigration issues. “We appreciate the partnership with our Jewish allies,” said Betty Hung, policy director of the L.A.–based Asian Pacific American Legal Center. An estimated 3 million undocumented U.S. residents are Asian. California counts the nation’s largest Asian population without legal resident status — about 400,000. APALC has been an active participant in the ADL’s Asian Jewish Initiative, founded in 2006, which brings together civic, business, academic and faith leaders in the L.A. community for social mixers, awards dinners and educational programs.

For all this organizational solidarity, opponents of the reform legislation are not hard to find in the Jewish community.

One outspoken Jewish opponent is Stephen Steinlight, a former director of national affairs for AJC who criticizes the bill as “amnesty” for illegal immigrants and opposes any “pathway to citizenship” for them.

“My views changed,” he told the Forward, explaining his break with the AJC and his alliance with the conservative Center for Immigrations Studies. “AJC made no distinction between legal and illegal immigration,” he said.

Steinlight, who characterizes the pro-reform Jewish leaders as “do-gooders leaning over backwards for the aggrieved,” sees immigration as a threat to American workers, especially under-employed African Americans. Groups like AJC and HIAS, he said, are “trying to make amends for doing nothing for Jews during the Holocaust.”

Diamond acknowledged that views similar to Steinlight’s are not hard to find. “To my dismay, I have heard more than a few voices in the Jewish community — rabbis I respect, and other leaders — who have said to me, ‘This is not our problem,’” Diamond said. “My response is that this is very much a Jewish issue, one of the most critical issues facing us in this country, and certainly here in Southern California.”

For Wendy Braitman, a member of IKAR, the L.A. Jewish congregation led by Rabbi Sharon Brous that has made social activism a mitzvah, it’s also personal. “I feel like it’s my story,” she said. Braitman embodies the grassroots dimension of much of the Jewish activism on this issue. In April, Braitman sat in Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Washington office with a group of interfaith activists who paid their own way from the California lawmaker’s home state to lobby her. “I told her I was Jewish,” said Braitman, “and that the issue was of importance to Jews all over the country. As Jews we know what it’s like to live in the shadows.”

More on this from the same newspaper:
President Obama recently announced his recommitment to achieving comprehensive immigration reform, a term that has become shorthand for legislation to fix the country’s broken immigration system. We — as Americans and as Jews — have a special responsibility to help him achieve this goal.

We should praise the president’s message and this initiative, but we also should make sure that Obama and members of Congress follow through. As Jews, we should promote policies that fulfill the Torah’s mandate to “welcome the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt.” We have a long history as a people of migration, and we know that generous and effective immigration policies have often made the difference between life and death, between grinding poverty and the opportunity for success.

...In today’s harsh, polarized political climate, it will be more challenging than ever to find the common ground needed to craft fair and effective immigration reform. But, remembering our responsibility to seek justice, the Jewish community can join together with allies to change the nature of the immigration debate, now simple sloganeering, to a bipartisan national consensus. We need to educate and organize within the Jewish community, advocate to government officials with whom our community has developed close ties over other issues and seek to make common cause with partner communities.

...Ultimately, changing our immigration system is not just about how we treat people in this country; it is also about honoring our history and what immigration to the United States has meant for us. As Americans, we must ensure that we are an inclusive nation, not one defined by fear and isolation. And as Jews, we must remember that we are commanded to welcome the strangers — not because they are Jews, but because we are Jews.

Let's imagine that the Jews in the Counterjihad movement were people of good faith who just happened to be unaware of these goings-on. What kind of response could we expect to see from them? Something along the lines of:
Thank you Cheradenine for bringing this to our attention. I am amazed and appalled that this kind of outrageous lobbying on a sensitive issue is being carried out in the name of Jews. I believe that the views of these organisations are not those of the majority of ordinary Jewish people. Lobbying by nominally representative Jewish organisations should be strictly confined to issues where there is a direct Jewish interest at stake. Any other kind of political activism, especially on such a controversial matter, risks needlessly provoking anti-Jewish antagonism. I will be writing a letter to this organisation making my views on the matter clear. If they want to lobby for loose immigration policies they should found some other organisation to do it and stop acting in the name of Jews.

Is that the kind of response we see in the comments below or in other threads where I have highlighted this issue? No, it is not. What kind of response have we in fact seen? Since I have cited factually unimpeachable evidence to support my claims, factual disputation, never an Oriental specialty, hasn't featured much, if at all, in the responses. There was the inevitable accusation of impure motivation: antisemitism/Islamophobia/racism, same thing. When it became clear that I, unlike most Europeans, was not vulnerable to guilt-based manipulation, the approach changed. The responses we see now have been reduced to snide, snivelling little whining posts, with some weak attempts at jeering or denigration.

Virtually every so-called Counterjihad site in North America has now stopped linking to me. Fuck them. Traffic has dropped hardly at all. (Honourable exception [so far]: BareNakedIslam, run by a Jewess.) Since the stories I feature here are generally unique in the English language, I have seen these sites act in pitiful ways when they want to use a story I have highlighted. Instead of linking to my translation, they might link to the original source in Google Translate or else link to a third-party website that has reproduced my post. How sad is that?

What conclusion should we draw from this? Did ordinary Jews already know this was taking place in their name and approve of it? Do they share the sentiments? Or are they simply instinctively rallying round their fellow Jews when their conduct is challenged? The truth is I don't know the answer. I'm still thinking about it. But the quality of the Jewish responses to my posts on this topic is certainly darkening my perception of them as a people.

UPDATE: Some more on this. Jews and Muslims fasting together to support illegal immigrants in the USA.

Jewish and Muslim Group Asks Followers To Fast in Support of Undocumented Workers

Two groups — one Jewish and one Muslim — are calling on their supporters to fast in support of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice and the Muslim Public Affairs Council are advocating a fast on Dec. 6 to show members of Congress their support for reform of the country’s immigration laws. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), who is Jewish, and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), a Muslim, also will participate.

“Jews and Muslims share the tradition of fasting to mark especially important and somber occasions,” Hadar Susskind, Bend the Arc director, and Haris Tarin, director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council D.C. office, said in a joint statement. “Our two communities are fasting together now to remind Congress that every day Congress drags its feet on fixing our broken immigration system, another 1,100 people are deported.”

"Four general maxims which will prove an adequate preventive of persecution mania if their truth is sufficiently realised.

• The first is: remember that your motives are not always as altruistic as they seem to yourself.

• The second is: don't over-estimate your own merits.

• The third is: don't expect others to take as much interest in you as you do yourself.

• And the fourth is: don't imagine that most people give enough thought to you to have any special desire to persecute you."

Amnesty Incorporated: DHS Hires Activist Immigration Lawyers

Despite the sequester, the Department of Homeland Security has just completed a hiring blitz of attorneys to oversee and manage immigration litigation. Almost all of these new civil service attorney hires hail from an activist pro-amnesty and pro-asylum background. Sources within the Department of Homeland Security report that the process for hiring these new career civil service lawyers was unconventional and was conducted by an Obama political appointee within DHS.

The new attorneys have activist backgrounds with a variety of pro-amnesty groups such as the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the Advancement Project, and open borders groups funded by the Tides Foundation.

PJ Media previously reported on attorney hires within the Justice Department Civil Rights Division in the Every Single One series. That series demonstrated that every single attorney hire had a leftist or Democrat activist pedigree. The Department of Justice Inspector General criticized those DOJ hiring procedures as producing ideological outcomes. PJ Media only obtained the resumes of DOJ hires after this publication was forced to sue Eric Holder in federal court under the Freedom of Information Act.

Now, sources inside DHS have provided PJ Media with the employment history and pro-amnesty backgrounds of the newly hired lawyers who will be enforcing federal immigration laws.

The ideological histories of these new DHS lawyers undermine confidence that the federal government will vigorously enforce federal laws, notwithstanding any congressional “mandates” to do so.

These lawyers were hired through unconventional means by former DHS chief counsel for Citizen and Immigration Services Stephen Legomsky. Sources at DHS report that when Legomsky was hired by Secretary Janet Napalitano’s Department, he was not even an active member of any bar association. After resigning in October 2013, Legomsky is now a professor of law at Washington University. His scholarship is most notable for its hostility toward barriers to entry for foreigners coming to the United States.

Here are the backgrounds of the new lawyers hired at the DHS in the recent hiring blitz:

Just like clockwork, another Jew-bashing story on a website that claims to be reporting stories on Islam. Hey CZ, if you put your arms straight out to the side, it will be more difficult to throw a net over you.

In the name of Allah Most Gracious Most Merciful. Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say: "We are Christians:"

So even mohamed recognized that the Jews were his worst enemies. I say the enemy of my enemy is my friend. CZ is not a friend to Jews, Christians or Western civilization in general. He continually attacks the Jews who are on the front line of civilization fighting back the blood thirsty barbaric moon worshipers.

They're on the front lines, opening the gates to those barbaric moon worshippers. And the fact that you other Jews choose to rally round the Jews who do this rather than denounce them, is very, very revealing.

At this point, perhaps someone should decide to read more into the fact that 90% of Europeans think, "Israel are the new Nazi's, therefore the Holocaust is justified as is everything the Mohammedans do to (insert insulting euphemism here)", and start making sweeping statements about "all Europeans". And to be honest, if pseudo-intellectual slobs were merely risking their own involuntary loss of anal virginity, I would not particularly care, it is probably the best sex they will ever have anyway. It just seems petty to think in terms of who did what when it is their children paying the price.

And there is the jewish response. "So what." No condemning these open borders genocidal Jews. Just attacking people who point out the Jewish role in opening the borders and bringing in the Muslims.

"so what" strikes me as neither an attack, nor a "Jewish response". It just seems like a basic difference in worldview and communication styles. 3 Jews=10 opinions. These individuals are clearly speaking for themselves only, and even in those cases the outlandish comments are most likely primarily an attempt to engage in a robust debate, rather than announce a permanent opinion and take action accordingly.

The point that was trying to be made (I imagine) was that one can find a million unpleasant and racist comments, which were then acted upon by Europeans, and that it is therefore hypocritical to single out someone else for doing the exact same thing, but with less action. Personally I don't think it is hypocritical, as white people/Europeans do in fact crucify themselves as a group for the thoughts and actions of a few.I am just not sure that that way of being is morally superior.

The statement that 'immigration' should be supported strongly by Jews because of a "Torah mandate to welcome the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt" is deliberately obfuscating that this 'mandate' actually refers to the concept of one who 'sojourns' (to journey, or pass through, with the implicit understanding of a short stay --- originally from the Latin meaning of a very limited time period) and therefore, the hospitality rendered was to be of a type necessary to give sustenance to the traveller who would then depart after a short stay. If you are someone who invades a person's home or their property or their country, you are not a 'sojourner', nor are you an 'immigrant'. You are an invader. EVERY group of people, however small or large, poor or rich, throughout all of history, whatever their religious views, understands the concept of hospitality. It should never be used as an excuse for countenancing illegality or destruction of nationhood.

The whole discussion what the Jews did or did not, has no sense. The diversity in political view among them is as big as the diversity everywhere else. The Natural Born Idiots among them are multiculturalists and political-correct. The majority don’t give a damn of what others think or do. Others are even devoted racists and xenophobes; mostly the less rich, who had fallen victim to racial attacks of non whites in their neighbourhoods. I have very little knowledge on what is going on in America. It does not interest me that much; America is very far away from my bed. In western & northern Europe the number of Jews is so scant (WWII and intermarriage) that nobody counts them. The import of hostile elements and enemies from Muslim countries and Africa keeps on rolling by lefties and liberal multiculturalists who do not give a damn. They only goal is the fall of the nation state even if the price is bloody high.

"For what applies to other countries in the world does not apply to contemporary Israel, as it is unique...Jews, according to this racist position (of the Talmud), are permitted to do what is not permitted for non-Jews.”

The conclusion states that: “The Talmudic heritage has a significant impact on the formulation of Jewish identity based on holy (principles of) racial isolation…It (the Talmud) also established the extreme positions that advocate hatred toward non-Jews, the violation of their rights and looting of their lands and property.”

To Anonymous @ 17:05: Interesting link to the Jewish newspaper reporting on the Arab translation of the Talmud, and the commenters' remarks; Jews are not unaware of the passages in the Talmud which are hostile to non-Jews --- the Talmud is taught in all yeshivas (Jewish faith schools) and is the core text in training rabbis. There are already several English translations available on-line of the Babylonian Talmud (halakhah); I note that the Jewish newspaper is of the view that the translation is relatively accurate.

An honest and dispassionate discussion of the Talmud would certainly explain to the wider public a great deal of the historical hostility (never a one-sided affair) between Jews and non-Jews, and why the so-called 'counter-jihad' movement is so blinkered and misdirected and is unlikely, in its present state of mind, to prove helpful in dealing with the manifold threats, from several groups and peoples, to Western civilisation and countries.

I don’t know where you get your information from. You write: “someone should decide to read more into the fact that 90% of Europeans think Israel are the new Nazi’s, therefore the Holocaust is justified…etc.”. Newspapers that are writing such things, are equal to the Pravda and is deliberately lying. I am living in western Europe. I cannot speak on behalf of French or Spanish speaking people, but I know what the Dutch, German and Scandinavians are commenting an posting on their blogs and papers. Israel has lot of friends in Western- and Northern Europe; most of them belong to one of the Protestant churches. The Europeans are very anti Jewish. One of them, a Norwegian woman from Bergen in Norway, had informed her friends on Facebook when Chanukah take place and how many candles have to be lighten every day.
