From Junge Freiheit:

Rome – The Italian Government has threatened to let asylum seekers go free to other EU countries without any procedure. “Either Europe helps us on this issue, or we’ll let the refugees who have arrived to Sicily go free to other European countries, as the most of them wish”, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said.

He requested the cancellation of the so-called „third-country clause“, according to which asylum seekers must apply for asylum in the EU country to which they have arrive first. “Migrants should have the possibility to get political asylum in all EU countries, not only in Italy”, Alfano emphasized.

The background (for this issue) is the growing number of asylum seekers who try to reach Italy by crossing the Mediterranean Sea. In case Alfano would go on with his threat, a new wave of asylum seekers would come to Germany, for here the welfare payments are high.

Italy had already in the past given visas to illegal immigrants and advised them to go Germany. Many of them arrived in Hamburg and threatened to use violence in case they would not get permanent residence permits in Germany.

The EU Commission showed restrain in its first reaction to this. “We are always ready to listen, but one must have it clear that we cannot take the place of the Italian authorities”, a spokesperson for the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström said.
