The Interior Minister of North Rhine – Westphalia, Ralf Jäger, has warned of a renewed strength of Salafism in this the most populous federal estate. According to declarations he made on Monday during the presentation of the report made by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, their number increased to 1800 individuals in NRW. This would mean 300 more as compared to the previous year. In 1012 the security authorities had counted some 1.000 violent Salafists in North Rhine – Westphalia.

„Salafism is the fastest growing extremist tendency in the whole federal territory”, Jäger warned after a report published in the Rheinischen Post. The Salafist scene made use of the civil war in Syria in order to radicalize people and make them join the fight in that country. This causes him a lot of concern. 120 Islamists departed just from NRW to Syria to join the fight. As for the whole of Germany, the number was of some 320.

According to security officials, it is mainly the possible return of such Syrian soldiers to Germany what hides a danger for the public security in the Federal Republic, for radicalized Muslims already have experience with weapons and explosives.
