There are "powerful reasons" to assume that immigrants are overrepresented in cases involving rape, criminologist Jerzy Sarnecki says. He believes that this over-representation has its cause in, among other things, class differences.

Criminologist Jerzy Sarnecki made a surprising admission in today's episode of the net radio program “Granskning Sverige”: immigrants are overrepresented in cases of rape.

- “I think that there are pretty strong reasons to suppose that immigrants are overrepresented in the number of rapes committed in Sweden” Professor Sarnecki said.

He believes that this over-representation is due to, among other things, "social class" and "living conditions, in a broader sense".

When Sarnecki was asked why rape has not become less common in concordance with the fact that the class differences in society have declined, he said that one reason might be that women are living a more external life of entertainment now than they were doing before.

- “When women did not participate in the same way in the life of entertainments and stayed much more time at home, then there were lower chances for them to be subjected to rape”, Sarnecki explained.
