The Basilica of the Sacré Coeur in Paris has been smeared by vandals. According to the online edition of “La Croix”, such paroles as “down with God”, “burn the chapel”, or “fuck tourism” were found at the entrance zone on Wednesday morning. Unknown perpetrators sprayed then bronze statues, walls, floor tiles and columns of the Basilica, which is one of the symbols of the French capital. The socialist mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, as well as politicians from other parties, condemned this incident.

The parole „long live the commune“ refers to the leftist revolt of the „Parisian commune“ against the government which took place in 1871, and the 143th anniversary of this event was celebrated last Tuesday. This revolt began on the Montmartre hill, on top of which the basilica was built. Sacré Coeur is the second most prominent church in Paris after the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
