Police in Athens stopped and searched motorists and pedestrians on Monday outside the headquarters of an extreme right political party after its members attacked immigrant street vendors.

The police move came after Golden Dawn party members last week smashed stalls at a church fair in Rafina near Athens and at a farmers’ market in the central Greek town of Messolonghi.

Videos of the attacks posted by the media on the Internet showed gangs of men dressed in boots, black shirts and carrying Greek flags smashing the stalls in the presence of Golden Dawn members of parliament.

The party said it had organized the attacks. It also said it would take legal action against the police for “interrupting the free operation of our offices.”

The local police chief in Rafina was suspended pending the results of a government inquiry. No police were seen in any of the videos.

Golden Dawn, which political opponents brand as being neo-Nazi, has soared in popularity as Greece sinks deeper into a debt-fueled morass. The party won nearly 7 percent of the vote in June’s election and 18 seats in the country’s 300-member parliament.

Its support has climbed to 12 percent, according an opinion poll published last week.

The party rejects repeated allegations made by immigrant and human rights groups that it is linked to a sharp recent increase in racist attacks.

Also Monday, Greek’s public order ministry withdrew police guards who were protecting Golden Dawn lawmakers, saying it didn’t want the guards to face a conflict of interest between protecting officials and having to stop them from breaking the law.

This video shows negroes complaining that the police witnessed Golden Dawn's attack on the market stalls and did nothing to stop it. Suspicion of police sympathy or complicity with Golden Dawn probably explains why the local police chief has been suspended.

The Public Order Ministry was locked in a dispute with neofascist Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) on Monday following a decision to revoke the party’s right to be assigned state-appointed body guards, after a spate of assaults on migrants, and a police crackdown outside the party’s offices prompted Golden Dawn to take legal action.

Early on Monday, the police issued a statement that the officers granted to Golden Dawn’s 18 MPs for protection, in line with Greek law, would be relieved of their duties to prevent the guards from facing a conflict of duty between protecting the lawmakers and stopping them from breaking the law. The statement noted that guards would continue to protect party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and Golden Dawn’s offices.

Later in the day, in an apparent attempt to underscore the authority of the police force, officers were dispatched to stand outside the party’s headquarters near the capital’s Larissis railway station, stopping visitors to check their ID cards.

The party quickly condemned the initiative as a “violation of the Constitution” and took out an injunction against Police Chief Nikos Papagiannopoulos.

Meanwhile Supreme Court prosecutor Yiannis Tentes called on prosecutors in Rafina, northeast of Athens, and Mesolongi, in the Peloponnese, to conduct speedy investigations into the raids on migrant street stalls in those towns. The police chief who had been on duty at Rafina’s main police precinct on Friday night when dozens of men wearing black T-shirts adorned with the Golden Dawn logo smashed down migrant kiosks has been suspended. And authorities are to forward to Parliament a case file regarding two Golden Dawn MPs linked to the Rafina raid.

In a related development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed concern about a spike in “violent xenophobic attacks against migrants, refugees and asylum seekers” in Greece and reports of the police’s inability to tackle the problem.

The only racist attacks that happen in Greece are committed by islamists against Greek people. In the island of paros, a paki illegal immigrant raped a 15 year old Greek girl and then threw a rock in her head. The girl is in a coma. There is not an increase in racist incidents. There is a rapid increase in criminality by Islamists who commit crimes against other islamists and against Greeks.
