Two Russians, one of them Chechen, and a Turk, Al Qaeda terrorists, have been arrested in La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz and Ciudad Real.

Explosive material was found in a flat in La Línea, although how much has not been released, and the National Police say they were prepared to ‘attack in Spain and in other European countries’

The investigation, which remains open, is being directed by the central judicial court five and the judge Pablo Ruz. It is an investigation which has ‘international ramifications’.

The Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, gave a press conference and said ‘This is one of the largest investigations which have taken place until now against Al Qaeda at an international level’. The three detainees are said to have enough explosives to blow up a bus.

Two of the arrests took place on a coach which was travelling from Cádiz to Irún on Wednesday. Police think the terrorists had the idea of going to France. The Minister said one of the two showed ‘brutal resistance’ against the police. He is thought to have extensive military experience and the Turk.

The three terrorists have been living in La Línea for two months, and were following by police ‘for some time’.
