In recent years, 5,440 foreigners have acquired Belgian nationality without ever having set foot in Belgium, Het Laatste Nieuws reports on Tuesday, based on a question of Theo Francken (N-VA) to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"The law on fast access to Belgian nationality has gone off the rails," says Mr Francken. "In Germany and France, it is totally impossible to obtain nationality without having lived in the country."
