Based on a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis is a French animated film that tells the story of a girl growing up during the Iranian revolution. On Friday evening it was shown on the Tunisian television channel Nessma, followed by a debate on religious fundamentalism.

A flurry of death threats and calls to burn the station down then appeared on Facebook. Last night, the Salafists moved from words to action. Around 300 of them descended on the television station and tried to burn it to the ground. They were dispersed by security forces before they could do it.

The director of the television station, M. Karoui, said:
"We will not let ourselves be intimidated and we will continue to show the films we want. We haven't seen off one dictatorship to return to another."
