Four men have appeared in court charged with offences linked to the grooming and sexual exploitation of teenage girls.

Omar Mazafer, 21, Mohammed Suleman Farooq, 22, and Shiraz Afzal, 25, are jointly accused of conspiracy to rape a child. Mr Afzal is also charged with inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

A fourth man, Waqas Khalid, 18, is accused of witness intimidation. The men, from Brierfield, a small town between Nelson and Burnley, Lancashire, are alleged to have committed offences against two 14-year-old girls in September and October last year.

They were arrested this week after an investigation by detectives from the Freedom team, a multi-agency child sexual exploitation unit in east Lancashire.

Mr Khalid was granted conditional bail by Burnley magistrates pending an appearance at Burnley Crown Court on December 15. His three co-accused were remanded in custody and will next appear at Burnley Crown Court on November 14.
