Parliament's president Jerzy Buzek said the EU is ready to accept Kosovo into the "European family".

But, speaking on Tuesday, the Polish MEP cautioned that the country must first meet the "strict" criteria for EU membership.

Buzek was speaking after a meeting in parliament with the president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga. It was her first visit to parliament.

Speaking at a news conference later, Buzek said the pair had had a "very rich discussion" and appealed for Kosovo's independence to be recognised.

He pointed out that parliament had asked for this in its resolution of July 2010.

Buzek added, "Kosovo's future lies in the EU, together with all Western Balkan countries. We want Kosovo to achieve reconciliation, stability, democracy and prosperity.

"Any progress in that regard requires good relations with all neighbours and strengthening the rule of law. We discussed intensively the problems connected to organised crime and corruption."
