According to the German historian Egon Faig, as reported on Michael Mannheimer's website, since the Middle Ages Muslims have enslaved more than 50 million Africans and are still doing it today. Although people of European origin tend to get the blame for the slave trade, they were, in fact, the ones who largely suppressed it.

This article in the German press reports that even the North Sudanese government admits there are around 35,000 slaves (non-Muslims) held in North Sudan.
Human rights groups like SOS Esclaves reckon that there are at least 600,000 serfs in Mauretania alone, although the fundamentalist-led state has had an anti-slavery law since 2007. Terres des hommes even estimates that there are more than 2 million enslaved people worldwide, including so-called forced workers. These exist in Brazil, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Unlike most mainstream press articles, this one is refreshingly candid in admitting that the slave trade in Africa has a "long tradition that is sanctioned in the Koran".
