In total, 776,000 people acquired citizenship in one of the 27 EU states in the year 2009. Britain was in the lead, with 204,000 citizenships granted, followed by France on 136,000 and Germany on 96,000.

Those gaining citizenship came originally from the following places:

Africa 29%
Asia 24%
Non-EU Europe 22%
North and South America 15%
Oceania 1%
8% were intra-EU

The leading countries of origin were:

Morocco 59,900
Turkey 51,900
India 31,100
Ecuador 27,800
Albania 26,700
