In an interview with the Welt am Sonntag, Bavarian Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, threatens to re-introduce border controls in response to Berlusconi's madcap plan of handing out temporary residence permits to the thousands of North African savages who have been coming through Lampedusa.

We will not accept that the Italian government simply declares the Tunisians to be tourists and shoves them into other countries in this way.

Germany has no direct border with Italy but the North Africans could be expected to reach German territory through Austria, so the controls would be introduced along the Bavaria-Austria border.

Meanwhile, although the German government has refused the Italian government's request to accept a share of the Lampedusa burden, it has agreed to accept 100 other North Africans who had arrived in Malta. Malta has also been inundated with North African economic migrants, although to a lesser degree than Lampedusa.
