A spokesman for the German police officers' trade union today called for strict border controls to be introduced in Germany in response to the influx of North African migrants to Europe, predicting that many of them would otherwise end up in Germany. He made it clear that he was thinking not only of the crisis in Italy, but the situation in other southern European countries like Greece, too.

Referring to the Schengen Agreement as a "fair weather model", he called on politicians to consider abandoning it completely if the situation escalated further.
