Avignon, a former seat of the papacy, is currently hosting an art exhibit called "I Believe in Miracles". The centrepiece of the exhibit is a photograph called "Piss Christ", which depicts a statue of Christ crucified immersed in a tank of urine. This is being financed by the town council, controlled by Sarkozy's ruling UMP party.

70,000 Catholics have signed a petition objecting to the exhibition, and a protest march is due to be held tomorrow. The deputy mayor has refused to back down, however, insisting on the importance of artistic freedom.

But would this have been her reaction if the crucifix had been a Koran or a statue of the con man Mohammed?

This is actually a beautiful image. The colours are golden and the cross seems to glow. I'm sure the religious should have taken it as an alagory of the strength of christ who came to earth as a very human man who would have pissed and shat and did all the human things but his glory shinned through the filth and degradation he was treated with and faced in his life. And we can follow that example and rise the surface. Truly shine among the filth. He who has eyes to see, let them see.
